Boeing 777-200LR | PIA | AP-BGY

PIA 777-200LR AP-BGY c/n 33781, delivered February 2006 to PIA

Boeing 777-200LR

role : wide-body airliner

importance : ****

first flight : 8 March 2005 operational : March 2006 (AP-BGY PIA)

country : United States of America

design :

production : 61 aircraft

general information :

This version of the 777 is the airliner with the longest range in the world. It can fly 17446 km with 301 passengers !

On February 2, 2006, it was awarded the certificate of airworthiness. It is a competitor to the A340-500. To demonstrate its long range, the -200LR (Longer Range) made a flight on November 9, 2005 from Hong Kong to London, but not according to the normal shortest route but in the other direction over the Pacific Ocean, North America and the Atlantic Ocean. The distance of 21601 km was covered non-stop in 22 hours and 42 minutes! Already in February 2000 Boeing decided to build the -200LR, but due to the crisis after the 9/11 attacks the project was stopped in October 2001. It was not until March 2003 that development continued.

To reach the maximum range of 17446 km, 3 additional tanks must be placed in the rear cargo hold, each with a capacity of 7000 liters.

Without these tanks, the -200LR can carry 181286 liters of fuel, what gives a range of 16021 km.
